The Devils Chair
A gore fest that is also a great satire on the genre.
A trip to Ireland to take shrooms while camping in a woods, this could never go wrong. Theres a lot of humour in this with talking cows and other trippy stuff, there is also sadly lack of a coherent plot. I wonder though if it supposed to have one, it’s possible that the trippy nature of the film had allowed the makers to purposefully leave out plot points.
Terrible found footage film, that starts as an investigation into the murder of 2 little girls and winds up a snuff film.
The Omen (2006)
Last year I pointed out the only reason for this remake was the date. This year I’d like to say in relation to Sam, this version of Damien would probably be scared of him. This will always be a bad film, whither it’s dragged out and watched once a year or not.
If Sam ever met Damien the later would laugh in his face and wonder what sort of fraud he was and that is where this film fails. The tension is great, even the plot is great, but the kid playing Sam is the single most unscary thing ever!
Welsh mythology here. This is based, very very loosely, on the amazing novel Sheep by Simon Maginn
Cronenberg’s take on divorce and evil children. This was shocking stuff in ‘79 and still holds up, with the birthing scene being one of the most disturbing things in modern cinema.
Nightmare In A Damaged Brain
This movie is just one long WTF moment. It’s 80’s gore and half assed storyline have made this a cult classic. One of the many video nasties this was of course banned in the 80’s.
I just love this film and it is perfect for staring out in the horror genre. Similar plot line to Daddy’s Girl and Mikey, but with a fresh take on the formula.
Jesus christ this has some parts that are scary. I could kill Nathan Gambles character myself for puppet clown fear because they scare the shit out of me. So even thought this is for little kids, it’s more scary than most films I’ve watched all year.
Films 78 and 79
Rest Stop and Rest Stop 2
Strangle set of films that can’t decide whither be character driven thrillers or torture porn. I’ve never been very sure if I like these two or not. They are listed together as part 1 works as a stand alone piece but 2 makes no sence alone.
I had a fit upon realising this was 10 years old. I remember seeing this in the cinema and it’s the images on the tape that has always stuck with me. The plot is nothing special, it was after all almost identical to the original, but those tapes always unnerved me and still do to a point.
