Last House On The Left (1972) Krug And Company cut
This is favourite of mine. Probably for all the very reasons it gets hate for. It’s brutal, stupid and has a dick being bitten off. I don’t know what more anyone could ask for in a film. I own this several times over on different VHS and DVD releases the cut I chose to watch today is featured on disc 2 of the dvd with the above cover. It’s a pretty good cut. I prefer it to the official uk cut of last house.
10 days on a deserted island. There’s no way this could end in a blood bath, none at all. Despite the set up this was surprisingly good. The cast is primarily 2 actors and one location and they pull it off pretty well considering what they had to work with. Sadly the genre of this film is a spoiler for the twist. I shall say no more.
The Stink Of Flesh
A zombie comedy about sex. This is one of the funniest films ever. It has a near perfect mix of gore, sex and jokes.
Night Of The Living Dead
What can you say about a classic. This if pretty much flawless and one of a small number of zombie films I truly enjoy. Could it be the evil child factor?
The Devil Inside
Found footage probably outlived it’s welcome in the 70’s, appart from the odd gem like [REC*] it’s almost always a let down, this was yet another turkey. This one is based yet again, on possession. I feel like I’ve seen so many possession films I may be possessed myself. It’s not that it’s the worst idea ever, or that it’s poorly acted that kills this for me, it is in fact the ending where precisely nothing happens.
Quarantine 2: The Terminal
7am browsing uk netflix pathetic horror section trying to find something I’d not seen already. This is better than I thought it might be. They dump found fottage and just play out a typical infection movie. There is a lead on from Quarantine in this but it’s nothing like [REC*]2 and I was glad I love the 3 rec movies and hate pointless remakes.
The Hills Run Red
Fun little take on the slasher/found footage genre. Every time you think you know what will happen there is another twist. I wouldn’t say there are too many twists, but there’s a fair amount. It also has 2 false endings, in fact the very first time I watched this I never saw the ending because I had stopped the dvd.
Two Thousand Maniacs
This is classic, and Eli Roth’s remake/reboot is not a patch on it at all. Old teeterin’ rock is the best part for me personally Also stand out is the humour surrounding Billy, the cat hanging tyke.
Eli Roth can make good films, this is proof of that. Here a bunch of morons go stay in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, as if anyone ever didn’t know you always die if you do this. David Hess’ beautiful soundtrack for Last House On The Left is featured and covered on this, it’s amazing when the ‘ice cream shop’ score is playing and I can recall Mari and Philys talking about pistachio ice cream. There is some great gore in this movie, completely over the top, but not into stupidity territory.
I thought I had seen this, but apparently not. It was reasonable, lame twist. These aren’t reviews really just accounts of what I watch this year. I thought this was pretty similar to My Bloody Valentine with ghost kids added. Fun movie to giggle to.
Ju-On: The Grudge
This begs me ask why remake foreign films. Not only can I watch this dvd with and without subtitles it’s also dubbed in English. This is a laugh a minute if you ask me. I can’t take the grudge films seriously at all, too many different sub plots all going on and too much nonsense it seems to me this was designed to make viewers laugh, rather than scare them.
This was another Saw type movie although the concept of choosing who died reminded me more of WdeltaZ by Tom Shankland more than Saw. There are lots of lame predictable twists in this movie and some bearable acting.
This is one of those ‘in the wake of saw’ films. However personally I liked this film. I like the part with the sand. I have no real idea why but I do. There seems to be several cuts of this film all with different torture sequences I don’t know if this was a censorship issue or different versions went to different countries though.
The Stepfather (2009)
I can’t recall if I watched this last year or not but I know I watched the original 3. This is a pretty pointless remake, the kind that does nothing but set the story in current time period. I often wonder why not just make a part 600 instead of a remake with these things. About the only plus side this movie has is Amber Heard.
So it’s that time of year again and October begins in 5 and 1/2 hours my time. Soi this year I have no theme. I literally went to the shelves and took dvd’s at random till I had a pile of 80 so my tv,netfix, cinema make up is 20 this year.
